GTSI

The Game Technology Software Initiative (GTSI) project is an effort to bring together vehicle engineering simulation and advanced interactive visualization to create a multi-functional tool and integration point for next-generation vehicular technology. The project, lead by TARDEC/NAC and Quantum Signal LLC, brings technology and experts from vehicle engineering, computing, and the entertainment simulation (video game) industry together to build highly functional tools for manned/unmanned vehicle development, training, and overall effectiveness assessment. The work in this project relates to core Army needs:

  • The capability will be used to develop new vehicle/vehicle subsystem concepts including advanced telematics systems, and evaluate their effectiveness in simulated combat scenarios. This allows the engineering of better vehicles in a much shorter timeframe and at a substantially lower cost. It also is relevant and vital to the transition of new technology from the laboratory and into the field to assist the war fighter.
  • It will enable advanced, real-time analysis of vehicle hardware/software performance as well as allowing study of human factors (man/machine interface) issues critical to the effectiveness of the war fighting unit. Using the GTSI technology Army labs can collect and incorporate soldier input early in the design process and thus build systems that will be substantially more useful out-of-the-gate.
  • The GTSI project will create highly-realistic simulations that run on extremely low cost hardware, and serve as a flexible simulation platform has relevance both in the training and engineering arenas. The continuing evolution and importance of simulation tools to the Army and its mission is clear, and GTSI is a project bringing together the right people and technologies to further advance this area.

How does this relate to core Army needs? The answer can be summed up as: Better visualization and engineering tools leading to better, more effective vehicles and systems being driven and operated by soldiers with enhanced, superior training.

What is special about GTSI? It is being developed by a combination of video-game industry experts and engineering staff with extensive experience in vehicle simulation.
