DOT Video

Quantum Signal develops and sells software and services that extract information from live or pre-recorded video.
Video for Data Collection
The explosion in the availability of low-cost, highly functional video cameras has given many engineers, marketers, researchers, and others a whole new way to collect data. Capturing an event, person of interest, or machine performance on video allows one not only to collect much more information than with a small number of “simpler” sensors, but also enable easy visualization of what has been collected. While the camera may seem like an ideal data collection tool, the problem faced by many is: how do I get the measurements or useful data out of the moving video images? That is, how do I translate what I see onscreen into numerical graphs that I can analyze?

Dynamic Object Tracking
Quantum Signal is pleased to announce Dynamic Object Tracking (DOT). DOT allows one to track objects in video and extract their motion data. This may sound easy, but it is very far from it. The technology is built upon years of in-house research performed at Quantum Signal and sponsored by the US government. DOT allows one to perform two broad classes of tracking:

Markers - DOT automatically detects and tracks tell-tale markers placed or located on an object. Examples of such markers can be those placed on vehicles for crash tests, a graphic or warning sign on the side of a moving truck, or a UPC on the side of a cereal box. As long as the marker appears similarly and is not subject to drastic appearance changes in the video, DOT can track it.

Unmarked Areas – DOT allows users to graphically select, via point-and-click, unmarked areas of objects for tracking. For instance, the window area of a vehicle, or a tire. Based on user input, the software intelligently creates an “area” and tracks the motion of that area over the time course of the video. This is an extremely powerful capability that allows even the novice user to become a video tracking expert!

The combination of two tracking types yields a powerful tool to extract useful numerical data from your video database. DOT tracking is highly robust, and works with videos and films of various qualities. To best understand DOT and it’s capabilities, we recommend you watch our short promotional video:

Crash Test Dummy Demonstration

DOT is a software development kit (SDK) designed for inclusion into larger software/hardware products. The DOT SDK is a compiled, callable library of functions that provide all of the core algorithms and technology needed to enable your application with cutting edge video tracking capabilities.

DOT SDK is platform independent, scalable, and compatible with all major compilers/development environments. Extensively tested and fully documented, DOT SDK is fully supported and actively being improved on a daily basis. It comes packaged with a simple demonstration application for testing purposes.

If your organization is interested in licensing DOT SDK, please contact Dr. Mitchell Rohde at 734-994-0028 x11, or email video@quantumsignal.com.

Quantum Signal has developed a set of tools and technologies for cutting-edge video surveillance. We combine advanced object tracking, adaptive backgrounds, statistical pattern recognition, and more to yield a solution that goes far beyond simple motion detection.

It allows the user to specify areas within videos to analyze (so-called “virtual borders”), define rules for translating action in these areas to specific indicators, perform online monitoring of one or many cameras, and generate actionable alerts when specific activity is detected.

One can track vehicles, individuals, or other objects in the video sequence, and generate reports that specify the path taken. It can be combined with PTZ motion platforms to yield fully tracking camera systems that give very high resolution on the target in question.

Quantum Signal technology is independent of hardware, and can function with almost any network of surveillance cameras or previously installed infrastructure. Applications include monitoring of facilities and resources, border patrol, retail store analysis (e.g. queue counting), casino table and floor, and more.

QS offers customized software development kits (SDKs) that include surveillance components to meet your needs.

Video for Real Time Face Detection, Tracking, and Extraction
QS offers a very high performance, robust software toolbox for the detection, tracking, and extraction of human faces from video or still images. See the biometrics page for more details.

Custom Image Processing and Machine Vision Solutions
Obviously, one size does not fit all when it comes to video processing and machine vision; processing vehicle crash-tests is much different from monitoring a casino floor.

Quantum Signal has extensive expertise in building custom solutions to difficult video monitoring problems. By listening to our customers, we are able to build systems that do NOT end up as forgotten technology demos but rather become an essential tool that enhances their effectiveness.

Quantum Signal leverages their extensive code base of machine vision tools to come up with prototype solutions very quickly, sometimes in days or even hours! We can work with your engineering staff to integrate intelligent video analysis with your product or service, or can handle the entire end-to-end including deployment.

If you would like to learn how to use video to your advantage, or improve your current video processing capabilities, please contact Quantum Signal at 734-994-0028 or email custom_vision@quantumsignal.com.
